I have a nicely dramatic story for this one!

Early that day, I had met up with good friend of mine from Russia. She was visiting the city for a few days and we set out together to try and capture some of the best sights New York had to offer.

After getting lost a few times, we finally made it out to the Statue of Liberty. We had caught the second-last ferry of the day, so we only had a half an hour until the final boat came to empty the island of its daily visitors.

It was both of our first time to the island and we walked around the whole perimeter taking in the occasion and enjoying the obligatory 'tourist shots' of posing in front of the statue.

Time got away form us and before I knew it we were being corralled by the security force to head back towards the dock in preparation to board the last ferry of the day, back to the city.

We ran to the dock and saw the ship coming, a dot in the distance only half way here from Lower Manhattan. I reckoned I had about 4 minutes to get my shot of the southern tip of New York City, from the statue. I set up my tripod, as I always do, to get a long exposure and blur out the water to give an almost surreal, dream-like impression.

I hadn't even gotten my camera on, when the closest security guard barked at me saying I couldn't be in the the grass, and that I had to be on the pavement and get in line for the ferry, I desperately explained my situation, how important it was and that I only had a few minutes to get the shot I needed. He gave me 1 minute.

I jumped the dock railing and got up to the sea wall. I turned my camera on, framed the scene and started the exposure.

About 10 seconds had gone by, when I heard the churning of sea and the rumble of a large engine. I looked up in horror and realized my shot would be cut off prematurely and I would never get my opportunity to take this picture of lower Manhattan that I wanted so badly.

As the timer ticked by on a 30 second exposure, the ship got closer and closer. I knew if I cut off the shot too early it would turn out black – underexposed. A sudden flash of bright light from my left side caught me off guard. It was the reflection of the bright setting sun off the ship's metal side that shone so brightly into my eyes.

With seconds to spare, before the ship cut into the camera's sight and ruined the picture, the 30 second timer ended with a loud 'click'. I had done it! I had gotten the shot, and just as I shouted this with joy, the large ferry cut across in front of me and completely obscured my view of the City. But it was over, all we had gotten was one try; but the gods of light must have been smiling down on us that day, as one try was all it took.

This was my 4th and final shot of the New York skyline from the South, and thus completing my North, South, East and West series.
