Chrysler Building & Grand Central Station
After a long day of shooting in the city, I made my way against the brisk winter wind to Grand Central Station, to catch the last train home.
As I approached the ornate revolving doors of the famous terminal, I looked up and saw the Chrysler Building shining brightly into the night above. I stopped momentarily to take in the beautiful sight... and almost got run over by a cab.
I had stopped suddenly with all my photo gear on my back, in the middle of a busy interception to revel in the beautiful sight.
Upon the shrill horn of an angry cab driver trying to get home, I ran to the side walk and pulled out my camera.
It was late on a frozen autumn night and the light was so low that I needed to secure my camera on a tripod and do a long exposure in order to get sufficient light for a sharp image. After plenty of experimenting, I found I had to get down on my stomach a few inches from the ground to get the most dramatic shot.
The only problem was the exact location I needed to be was in the middle of a busy crosswalk with yellow taxis flying by.
I needed a 15 second window to get my long exposure, and I had to time it between the lights. The traffic signal would turn red, and I ran to my spot in the middle of the interception, dropped down on my stomach and opened the camera shutter. I tensely counted the seconds in my hand, praying for no glitch in the traffic rhythm which would see me run over by the countless taxis that dropped their passengers off at this very station.
Right at the 15 second mark, I closed the shutter, sprang up clutching my gear closely and sprinted to the side walk just in time to avoid the tide of vehicles trampling across the asphalt upon seeing their green light. I had to repeat this madness 3 or 4 times before I got the exact shot I craved, but upon seeing the final take from the back of my camera, I knew I had fulfilled my vision and I scrambled to the side gratefully, barely disturbed by the spewing of profanity by the outraged motorists that drove across my 'spot' merely seconds after I has vacated it!
